Prospects for Subsidy-free Electric Power Without State Regulation

By Harry Valentine, Commentator/Energy Researcher, , March, 15, 2012 - The ongoing global fiscal situation may require national governments in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Portugal and even Poland to reduce national expenditures. Some of these governments may face the prospect of wary investors declining to buy their government bonds. State officials would have little choice but to drastically reduce national expenditures, fiscal action that would likely include the elimination of state subsidies, closure of state agencies and selling off state-owned corporations such as national railways, national airlines and national electric power systems.  more...

No Coal, No Nukes, No Problem?

By Jason Willan, Director of Risk Management and Research, Fellon-McCord, October, 27, 2011 - While the call for reduced dependence on coal-fired power plants and nuclear reactors to fuel the U.S. electricity grid is not a new concept, it is one that continues to grow louder. Renewable energy is the alternative generation source preferred by many, but non-hydro renewables made up less than five percent of the fuel mix in 2010, despite net generation from renewable sources more than doubling over the last decade. Meanwhile, natural gas-fired generation has demonstrated significant gains since the turn of the century, to the point that it currently accounts for nearly 25 percent of all power produced in the U.S. Although natural gas would be the easiest and lowest-cost replacement fuel, it is important to consider the potential risks and ramifications of a shift to gas should an escalation of coal and nuclear retirements occur.  more...

The Power of Demand Elasticity in Unraveling Energy Investment Opportunities in the Dark World

By Kanya Williams, PG - Student, Dundee University, October, 13, 2011 - The firm and seemingly irrevocable conclusion of Professor Ferdinand Banks in his article "A New Lecture on Electric Deregulatory Failure" Energy Pulse October 24 2007 and repeated in his latest article "A Short but Disobliging Version of my Recent Lecture on Electric Deregulation", has placed a wet blanket on my research efforts towards creation of a realistic and sustainable power capacity in energy deficient third world countries. The most devastating thunderbolt in the article to me was the statement that "if successful deregulation could not be achieved in a country as rich, technically advanced, and market-oriented as the US, then it could not be realized anywhere on the face of the earth, at least in the medium to long run".  more...

Renewable Energy for Urban Households in India

By A.K. Shyam, Environmental Specialist, GMR Group, August, 31, 2011 - Domestic energy consumption pattern varies from country to country depending upon their requirement for various activities. According to one estimate, per capita energy consumption ranges between 0.201 to 0.902 ToE (Tons of oil Equivalent)* respectively for India and USA (1 ToE = 42 GJ = 11 630 kWhr.). If China and India adopt Western Lifestyles, an extra 500 MToE/yr will be consumed. India, in particular would therefore need more and more power plants to match even the per capita of the world which stands at 0.348 ToE.  more...
